Alexander McQueen - Savage Beauty

Metropolitan Museum of Art director Thomas P. Campbell and Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton unveiled images and details of the exhibition, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, from May 4 to July 31 2011 in New York. It featured fantastical creations from each of McQueen’s collections, one hundred pieces of ready to wear from the McQueen archives and approximately seventy accessories - beginning with Nihilism (1994) and ends with his posthumous collection Angels & Demons (2010).

The exhibit coincide with the released of the book, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty by Andrew Bolton, which will include an interview with McQueen's sucessor, Sarah Burton and feature McQueen's most iconic and radical pieces.

McQueen was the most influential, imaginative, and provocative designer of his generation and was best known for his astonishing and extravagant runway presentations to provoke reactions from his audience.

I have always been awed by not only the thematic underpinnings to his work but also his innovative use of materials. Feathers became a skirt, alligator heads peeked out of jacket epaulettes, carved wooden boots became prosthetic legs, a jawbone became jewelry, mollusk shells became a corset. His creations were an outlet for his deepest emotions, often the darkest aspects of his imagination.

Seeing some of the divine pieces, I was thrilled by this recognition of British fashion in the world as well as his stand as an artist in his own right, even if his extraordinary and rare artistic vision was not widely appreciated. Each piece does the artist justice. The word "designer" does not fully capture his genius. McQueen was said,

"For me, what I do is an artistic expression which is channeled through me. Fashion is just the medium."

How I wish I was there admiring each piece in the exhibition, like how I did with Valentino. Oh well, throwing my hands back in the air, lying comfortably on my chair, shutting my eyes closed, I can already imagine the book looking great on my coffee table. =)

Shakespeare in the Park – Macbeth

The Singapore Repertory Theatre’s (SRT) acclaimed Shakespeare in the Park returned again with a production of the tragedy Macbeth.

Long before vampires and witches become fashionable, Shakespeare wrote Macbeth, one of his most dazzling and mysterious masterpieces. I was fascinated by the political intrigue, impressed by the love exciting battle scenes and most of all, awed by the relish luscious language (which made me wonder how life would be if we all communicate in it).

Directed by the celebrated British director Nikolai Foster (Flashdance on the London West End, the UK tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love), Macbeths’ destructive, volatile and sexually charged relationship will be brought to the fore in this contemporary take on The Bard’s last great tragedy. Foster trimmed peripheral scenes and characters to propel the rhythm of his Hollywood thriller-esque Macbeth with bloody battle scenes, anachronistically-detailed costumes, quirky props and pyrotechnic blasts - belched flames and smoke. He was able to give the audience an immersive experience with four-dimensional production - sound (some of the gunshots were slightly loud), light, music and murder by weaving the outdoor environment into the production's story line.

My fave are Adrian Pang (always), who played the luckless General and handles the dramatic final scenes with aplomb and the three witches, who deserved all the applause for their realness in the characters. The malevolence and spookiness of the witches are portrayed perfectly. During intermission, they crept and crawled as well as scorned at the audience, successfully sets the mood for the following scenes and subsequently won my heart. The interplay of ambience and stage lighting also contributed much to the sinister atmosphere.

All in all - sitting on a picnic mat, with blessed weather, beneath the clear evening sky with gentle wind stroking your face, watching Shakespeare's most famous supernatural suspense-thriller of all time kept me quite literally bewitched and gave me an unforgettable experience!

Italy

Standing with my four wheeled luggage in my hand, I took a deep breath at Malpensa airport in Milan. A chilly breeze reminds me that I am FINALLY in Italy.

"So, this is how living your dream feels like, eh?"

I looked up into the big blue sky and smiled, "Thank you".

To many, Italy could be a travel destination, a holiday break or even a fashion shopping spree. But for me, it's a dream - A dream I had since I was 17. Yes, it took me this long to go. I'm not sure why but I'm glad it is at this stage of my life I went. I used to think, I should travel with my dearest friends or save it for a special occasion like honeymoon perhaps.

But I hv come to realize, there ain't no special moment, no special day, no special occasion. This moment is special for a reason. Today is special because it is a gift and that's why it's call Present. Every occasion is special in its way - be it the way you like or not: it is special nevertheless.

My dream is just to meet my dearest friend again, whom I last seen when I was 17. It was a promise that we made in tears that we will one day see each other again. To teenagers with no money of their own, flying over the ocean seems impossible. We don't know when, we don't know how but we know the friendship we had built all these years will still be the same when that day comes. And that day did come. Our bond is indeed still the same. The differences is we were girls back then and we are now matured into ladies. I thank God each and every day for making this happen.

I couldn't be happier.

The trip couldn't be more prefect.

The companions couldn't be more awesome.

Although 24th March - 2nd April is quite a short trip but I am VERY glad I took the leap and gotten my feet wet in Italy because I now have the unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. =)

My father often used to talk about that old proverb, "Even a stopped clock is right twice a day". In other words, everybody you meet has something to teach you – if you take the trouble to find it. The most unlikely person can enlighten your life. That’s tremendously important for the self-worth of the people you meet, as well as your own.

The are all sorts of ways in which we’re not equal, but we are all equal in what we can strive for. When I interviewed Senator Robert Kennedy back in 1968 – the last interview he gave before his assasination – I asked him how he would like to be remembered. He replied, "Well, there is a line of Albert Camus that says, 'This is a world in which children suffer.' I’d like to have made a contribution to lessening that suffering." Kennedy spoke a lot about making a contribution. He used to say, "For if we do not do this, then who will to this?". It’s so simple : if you have a talent, you have a duty to use it to the full.

Making a contribution and making a difference – they should be linked – is not only something that famous people can do, or that dead politicians can be quoted on. It is something that everyone can do in their own lives…

Is there life after 30?

At the end of the day, we are all the same.

Busy looking after ourselves, busy making a living. We hardly ever look at things through other people's eyes. So our world gets smaller and smaller. Things slipped away unnoticed. And our fate changes its course without us knowing it. Who among us can say we've lived a life without regrets? (Stop trying to use justification to convince yrself on regret's non existence.)

I was so impetuous when I was young. But it's the essence of youth that made us face life and reality without thinking of consequences. Looking back now, I want to thank you all out there for giving me the best memories of each step and each phase of my life. I wouldn't want it any other way!

Some said life is a downhill after 30. I now know the party has just begun, baby!

While a man was polishing his new car, his 4 yr old son picked up a stone and scratched lines on the side of the car. In anger, the man took the child's hand and hit it many times, not realizing he was using a wrench.

At the hospital, the child lost all his fingers due to multiple fractures. The child asked, with pain in his eyes, 'Dad, when will my fingers grow back?'

The man was so hurt and speechless, he went back to his car, kicking it a lot of times. Devastated by his own actions, he sat in front of the and saw the scratches - 'LOVE YOU DAD'.

The next day, that man committed suicide.

Anger and Love have no limits - choose the latter to have a beautiful, lovely life.

Things are to be used and people are to be loved. But the problem in today's world is that people are used and things are loved.

Watch your thoughts, they become words.

Watch your words, they become actions.

Watch your actions, they become habits.

Watch your habits, they become character.

Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.

Strange Fruit - Singapore

Strange Fruit is a world renowned repertoire from Melbourne, Australia performing a wide variety of themes and stories in theatre, dance and circus using elevated or rather very unique medium. They have been awarded The Premio Del Publico Award – Valladolid (Spain) in 2003, The Governor of Victoria Export Award (Arts & Entertainment) in 2006. They had performed in over 50 different countries, at over 450 international festivals and events to more than 5 million people.

I am honored to have the chance to watch their sublime performance - The Spheres in Chinatown during the Chinese New Year festive. Perched atop on 5 meters high flexible poles, bending and swinging in the air, the audience were fascinated in absolute wonder - jaw dropped expression was common across the crowds. Poles are extremely strong to bear the human weight that allows the performer to flexibly bow at impossible angles and swayed back and forth in an elegant and spellbinding manner - like many dandelions in a light breeze. In fact, the idea was originally from images of wheats swinging along with the gentle wind in the fields.

The Spheres takes a dreamy as well as a magical journey through the miracle of birth and humanity's relationship to our planet. Performers stand on white, illuminated, gigantic fabric orbs and rise above their existence. It was an astonishing and mesmerizing show.

As much as photos and videos can show, it doesn't do them justice. You have to be there personally to experience the sublime, hypnotic beauty and wonder in utter fascination.

A youtube tab of this music video hv been opened on my Chrome and repeatedly playing for weeks now.

Love this orchestral country pop ballad, especially the indelible melody accompanied by the dark mood and the pleading lyrics.

Life is rough and heartbreaking at times. Do you hv a time in the year that you always think back on? Or when the calendar turn into that particular month, memories would flood back? I believe each one would hv ours and mine ain't December.

The Blower's Daughter - Damien Rice

Such a hauntingly beautiful song.

It is a great song about pining for someone. It was featured in the 2004 movie Closer, which captivated the very complicated relationships to express the pain and confusion of love.

There are various version of the meaning of the song:

* The "Blowers Daughter" refers to the daughter of a clarinet teacher. A "Blower" is someone who plays a wind instrument.

* Its about the daughter of a glass blower. In England Scotland and Ireland, a glass blower is reffered to as a blower.

* In a concert, Damien said this was written about his flute teacher's daughter.

* Drawn off from his experience as a mortgage broker, who did cold calling all day. He grew sick of speaking to people for 8 hours a day without seeing anyone's face, and he began to fantasize about the people behind the many voices he heard. One summer day, while trying to reach a man, he heard the soft, melodic and sweet voice of a young lady. (Blower is slang for phone)

He was actually calling for the father but her wasn't in. Protocol is that he should hang up the phone but despite of the risk of being sacked, they kept talking and Damien couldn't stop thinking about her and he kept calling back for her. Damien then began a secret relationship and always called her when he knew the father wasn't in. He dreamed of her at night, daydreamed about her all day long.

This continued for over a month, but unfortunately, she stopped answering the calls. Confused by the abrupt end, Damien was obsessed in anger and after discovering her address, he went over and hidden, he watched the same mesmerizing voice shouting out, "Bye Mom!" from a school uniform girl. Staring in shock, all the pieces of the puzzles fell in place. During school holidays, she was home and played games leading him on and when holidays are over, she stopped. The mysterious girl was the inspiration of this beautiful song.

Burlesque

I had watched Burlesque 4 times - not on DVD but all on cinemas! It is that good!!

Although I have to admit that the story line is painfully predictable and camera work ain't as artistic and elegant as Chicago but I still love each and every bit of it.

A big budget musical extravaganza - 2010 Golden Globe award winning musical film directed and written by Steven Antin and starring Christina Aguilera and Cher - the perfect cast! Burlesque is a glitzy tribute to two of the greatest divas ever.

The vocals are strong, unbelievably amazing costumes and the entertainment is absolutely mesmerizing. The sexy but innocent performances - sprinkled with hunger and lust holds you to the edge of your seats and the soulful vocals makes me bristled. It was hard to watch without tapping and clapping - even the 4th time!!

My fave song is "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me", Written by Diane Warren, performed by Cher - which won Golden Globe Awards, Best Original Song.

Habits.

A funny thing we human have.

Be it that they are good and beneficial or those that we regret time and again, we tend to repeat the same behavior, day after day.

Leaving things everywhere when we know its time to clean up the room.

Calling fast food delivery when the resolution is to eat healthily.

Anchored ourselves in front of TV even though we have been meaning to read a book or two.

We all have a picture of an ideal person we want to be. And so each year, we use January to make a list of amendments to give a heart-felt go at changing - to be somehow better.

Should we not first redefine our definition of reality and priorities? Is character not more important than our calendar??

We're convinced we're too busy to do that things we are meant to do. It's impossible to get it done, without quitting our job or neglecting our loved ones.

But honestly - REALLY?

Time is given and it has always been enough.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1, ESV)

When our fave TV show comes on, do we not squeeze time to watch?

When sale season is around the corner, do we not find time to hit down town?

When a dear friend wants to catch up, do we not make time for it?

There is always enough time because we make "time" all the time! Life is about choices.

You definitely have the 8 seconds to put the items back where they belongs.

Do groceries more often so your choice of food is not only fast food delivery.

Watch 1 less TV show and you have created more time to read a book or two.

Have you heard of Voice Print arts?

I just had (thanks to D.D.!) and I'm blown away by the idea. Technology never fails to amaze me.

Apparently, it is now a contemporary interiors. A wall decor item on the walls of your home can now be an artwork of your vibrations of phonetics - your very own voice.

A voiceprint uniquely identifies an individual - it's spectrographically produced based on the physical configuration of a speaker's mouth and throat, which is why it is used in voice ID systems for authentication. One can argue that hanging your own voice is a silly idea, just like publishing your own fingerprints or the iris's of your eyes. But who said it has to be yours? =)

It would be a fabulous idea if this is a gift. Imagine all your loved ones shouting in unison - "Happy Birthday" on your 50th, "Congratulations!" for your wedding or your wedding vow or even your baby's first words. It can be a continuous reminder, a display of what we deeply value or simply to capture significant audible moments of your life.

Thanks to D.D., I came to know this very rare opportunity in Singapore, in fact first in Asia! One hundred pieces from renowned Italian Maison, Valentino Garavani are featured in a curated exhibition at Resort World Sentosa till 13 Feb 2011.

‘Valentino, Retrospective: Past/Present/Future’ is developed by Paris’ celebrated institution Les Arts Décoratifs - by the current Creative Directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, who worked alongside Valentino himself for a decade before their appointment. The exhibition is titled so to underline the importance of the maison through history.

The exhibition offers fascinating glimpse of the haute couture world including the pieces that were worn by princesses, Hollywood celebrities and members of the high societies around the world such as Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth Taylor and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, among many.

"The Oscars 2001 would be remembered as the year the stars went vintage. Bagging an Oscar for her performance in 'Erin Brockovich' by Steven Soderbergh, Julia Roberts received the thumbs up for her appearance in this black vintage gown with white piping and sheet inset. Simply yet really classy looking piece!" - My fave, fave, fave!!!

This dress is actually from FW 1992 collections but the fact that Julia Roberts are able to wear in Oscars 2001 and still looks fabulous is just another classic example of how timeless Valentino's designs are.

His collections includes embellishments of rich embroidery, iridescent glass beads, classic rows of organza petals, pleated tulles and voiles, fringes quilted collar, ostrich feather cuffs, edged with shirred tulle boa, sumptuous fabric - the list will go on and on, which simply took my breath away.

Valentino Garavani was born in Voghera, south of Milan. At the age of 18, he went to Paris in 1950 to study École des Beaux-Arts and at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

Two years later, he found an apprenticeship with Jean Dessès fashion house, where he entered into the the high society of the French cinema. He frequented clientele that included the royal family from Egypt and Greece, notably Queen Federica.

In 1957, Valentino joined Guy Laroche for two years. With the funds from his parents, he opened his own couture house in the heart of Rome - Il Via Condotti.

For his first collection, he launches a distinct color - vivid, fiery yet passionate: the bright poppy red that became known in the fashion industry as "Valentino red". This probably is not new to you but the inspiring story behind it may be. (At least, it was to me.) His signature red was reported inspired by a flashback from his teenage years during a trip to Barcelona, when Valentino attended an opera and marvels at the woman sitting down in their booths forming a basket of red flowers. The famous red collection was inspired from a flashback! By a basket of red flowers!! I was awed how the brains of these geniuses work ...

Soon enough, his talents were well recognized and Valentino started to dress the ladies of the international best-dressed crowd such as Rita Hayworth as well as one of the period's great icons, Audrey Hepburn and many more.

At the age of thirty six (so young!), Valentino was at the height of his glory. In less than ten years of design, he had consistently seduced his audience with his timeless concept of elegance in the current interpretation of fashion trends.

On September 4 2007, Valentino announced that he would retire fully from the world stage after his last ready-to-wear show in Paris on October 4 the same year and his last Haute-Couture show in Paris at the Musée Rodin on January 23 2008.

Leaving the exhibition,

I am in awe of what human beings can do.

I am in awe of the artisan who sketches the silhouette of each piece.

I am in awe of the hand knit channel stitching of each garment.

I am in awe of how the constructed pieces portrays femininity and sensuality.

Of all most, I am in awe of Valentino Garavani.

Over the years, I only write one story, the one of my style, where each collection represents a chapter to another, but the main characters are always the same, as the people and things that inspire me. The protagonist of my story is always the same. Fashion n themes evolves as the story progresses, but the woman behind the pleats, and embroideries, and the bows remain the same. The title of this exposition, the Past/Present/Future, matches my conception of fashion, which is staying faithful to a personnel style that ignores the requirements from the outside world. This is the approach I followed by instinct, and one that, I hope, served me well for almost 50 years." Valentino Garavani

2010 was phenomenal. Experienced a variety of emotions.

Happiness

Fear

Denial

Forgiveness

Anger

Acceptance

Courage

Remorse

Worn out

Emotionally bankrupt

The list goes on. At times, been to both the extremes of the spectrums. Sometimes, back and fro, back and fro.

Some roads had been painful to walk.

There are days that it's tough to bear.

Nights that it's impossible to sleep through.

But at the end of the day, lying on my bed, I can only say - God still loves me nevertheless.

I am very thankful for the blessing of health (which brings freedom and very few realize it, until they no longer have it), a precious family (and Olio!) as well as GREAT friends.

People who did not say things I only want to hear but advice that I need to understand, people who patiently listened to me babble continuously, people who comfort me and let me cry, people who never said 'I told you so'.

Words of wisdom and encouragement are never scarce.

I shudder to think going through life without them. And for that, I'm grateful for each of you in my life.

The Blue Mansion

One of the best local films I have ever seen!

Though The Blue Mansion was released in Singapore back on 22 October 2009 and world premiere at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) but it was only now that I had the chance to watch it. It was the first Singaporean film shown in Alliance Francaise and it is such an honor to watch with the director Glen Goei himself, which followed with a session of Q & A from the floor. It is always "behind the scenes" that intrigues me most!

The movie is filmed mainly in the 19th century majestic blue mansion (During the times when it was built, the indigo blue paint was considered as a luxury for only the wealthy can afford), Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (Penang, Malaysia), a UNESCO Architectural Heritage Award recipient, which is rumored to be haunted. The house did have the spooky feel but with elaborate settings and extravagant props, why wouldn't it? But then again, on second thought, it is said that some scenes are deliberately dim to show the claustrophobic way we live in (Interesting, eh?).

Glen lived in UK for 20 years and came back to a very different Singapore. He took his time (11 years from his first movie) to listen to the voices of the society. The movie is drawn by his own experiences and family as well as those from the local cab drivers too (believe it or not!). Glen brutally and honestly picked the most common matter in Asia - Patriarchy: the typical one that is being trapped by family rules and obligations. It is thought provoking: Freedom in living, respect for authority, reluctance to criticize comes under the light.

The script took 3 years to write and 35 days to produce. This classy, not to mention quirky movie staged solid acting performances, well developed characters with cleverly crafted noir humor. Angles are shot elegantly and makes you applaud the director himself. This top notch production is a real credit to the local film industry!

What hit me most was the last scene: full frontal nudity shot (pixelated) of Emma Yong covered in blood. Rather than portraying the RA kinda feel, it was artistically shot. It reminds me very much of Alexander Mcqueen's Fall/Winter 1998 collection (last day of London Fashion Week), where the model stood in a red hooded cat suit (below), emerging as a creature of flame from within a giant ring of fire. Emma Yong is the dark horse in this show! I have always known her as the Dim Sum Dollies - chirpy, funny and spontaneous. But with such deceptively tough role, she flaunts her acting talents effortlessly. I love her in such dark and twisted roles. She is definitely a pleasant surprise!

I love this movie particularly because it shows another side of Singapore. A few Asian films are about contemporary society. Very few films are about dysfunctional family due to the shame of airing dirty laundry to the public. I love the fact that it is very down to earth.

As this movie is allegorical, it engages a wider audience and many can relate on different levels: Rivalry and politics within families, issues between father and daughters, mothers and sons. We can't be blaming our parents about our circumstances because we are responsible adults and we bear the consequences and circumstances that came along from the decisions we take.

The Blue Mansion reminds me of choices we made and we don't make - the unfulfilled hopes, dreams and desires within us. At certain extent, there is a Blue Mansion in every one of us and there is a hope that these buried feelings will find its release.

I love and hate how unexpected life can be ...

Thought the highlight of Explore Singapore: The Magic of the Night at the Peranakan Museum would be the illusion shows by JC Sum and Ning, as advertised. Bleh!

Yet, the most boring event I thought and I would probably skipped became our next discussion topic into the wee hours of the night, strongly accompanied by beers and dry martinis.

The Proletariat Poetry Factory - individuals in bloody mary red suits, typing frantically (at times, paused in frustrations) with old school typewriters. The produced poems by your given word for inspiration like servile poets to the public. Randomly appear locally in flea markets like MAAD, FleaFlyFloFun and Black Market at Dempsey.

A common word given created much controversy within yours truly.

First, irritated - so rude!

Second, frustrated - what rights do you have to say so?

Third, shocked - reality kicks in. The truth hurts.

Next, feeling exposed - naked.

Vulnerable, to be exact.

How can a total stranger wrote a random poem, inspired by an ordinary word hit me right spot on? Not a fan in coincidences. Am deeply awed in bewilderment.

Would love to know what inspires the poet and how the poet connects happiness to control. The perspective of life from an artist is truly different, eh?

Under my breath of @#$%^&, at the furthest corner of my heart, am grateful on the piece of advice given. Really! :)

“Voyage de la Vie” or the “journey of life” is a story of a boy’s metaphoric journey to adulthood.

Glamorous costumes, amazing stunts are the norms of circus. But through a theatre spectacular, it kept me on the edge of the seats, though there are times I am utterly confused where to look with every circus arts happening at the same time!

It would be a perfect show if not for the vocals. Let's just say, it's not those kinda voice you wanna hear over a microphone. It's forgettable, sorry fans of Jonathan Leong.

However, I was particularly enthralled by Viktor Kee, who is born in Ukraine. He's gifted and was enrolled in a well known college - College of Circus Art in Kiev for four highly specialized training program in juggling. He had performed in prestigious venues: Lido de Paris and Moulin Rouge (Paris), Friedrichstadtpalast (Berlin) and Royal Albert Hall (London), Pomp Duck & Circumstance (New York), Mirage and MGM Grand (Las Vegas) and being a principle performer of the famous Cirque du Soleil in a show "Dralion" (USA and Europe Tour).

McQueen Spr/Sum 2011

I hv to come clean, when Alexander McQueen passed away, I was skeptical whether Sarah Burton can keep the McQueen factor in future collections and whether the empire would crumble into pieces.

After seeing Spring Summer 2011 range, I'm pleasantly surprised. She kept the McQueen essence and signatures - intricate digital prints as well as bizarre silhouettes (I luv those McQueen shaped shoulders and sleeve!) and added with her touch - lighter and fluids designs.

When it comes to McQueen, pictures do not do him justice. You must watch the video to observe the details of each garment's perspective and feel how the fabric flutters and dances in the air!

My favorite is the dark but dreamy fairy tale evening gowns (the last 5 pieces from the fashion show in video blw).

PS: I had to say I miss McQueen's trademark theatrical shows!

Although I have been blogging since 2005, there are many blog basics that I still do not know. Only a year ago that I actually understand what RSS is all about. And only recently, I bother to find out what free link exchange is. Mainly because over the years, I had been approached by various webmasters about exchanging links but it all sounds like scams to me. Paranoid I am, you may say. Do you know what SEO stands for? Do you know there is such thing called "Link Farms"?

There were so many articles, websites and forums on this topic that information is everywhere and it is just over whelming for a simple girl like me. The more I read, the more confused I am. IAt one point of time, I actually think I am reading French! The more I dig, the more questions I have. Should I join some link exchange network to improve the page rank? If yes, which one should I join? Is there anything I need to be careful of? How do I actually go about and do the Link Exchange? Wait for it to fall from the sky??

Thanks to Link Exchanges that educates me on the whole topic in such crystal clear way! Big jargon words are translated into layman terms and each post length is readable too aka not too long, hehe! Easy to read, easy to understand and that is all I need!

The blog gave you tips on the best practices, what to avoid and watch out for but most importantly, the loopholes. It's basically a one stop for you to find out all the nitty gritty details. And being a simple girl, all these html stuff really ain't my cuppa tea so finding this blog that can explain such matters in REAL English is really a treasure! =)

It was only recently that I have a peace of mind and pondered on the small little things.

Brushing off tasks can seem so small.

A little heartbreak in the tone can be so small.

Whining about work can seem so small.

Words blasted out in frustration can seem so small.

Slightly biatch-ful attitudes can seem so small.

Making virtual lists of life you wish were different can seem so small.

It is the small little things that creepingly piled up with tension and with just a tiny, little, weeny prick, the rubber band will break.

More often than not, we are myopic. Yours truly too. Let's make an effort not to and look at life in a bigger picture. Bcoz it is only then that everything will makes sense.

December Rains (雨季)

December Rains (雨季) the Musical - my first Chinese musical and the first Mandarin musical ever written in Singapore. It was first staged in 1996.

I was totally mesmerized by Kit Chan. Once again, she outshines all the others and her fantastic vocals wowed the audience. Ever since I watched Forbidden City, I'm totally her fans! Without her, this musical would be just plain boring. George Chan is another of my favorite - he never fails to awe me. He does remind me of someone I know. =) I specifically love the creativity from the set designer in the illusion of a slanting stage and the minimalist approach towards the beautiful backdrop.

The plot is quite predictable and flat - a love story sets in Singapore's turbulent1950s and 80s. But the moving ballads did make up for it, as it strongly delivered the dilemma of chasing one's dream vs love, pain of losing a loved one as well as unrequited love.

December Rains will be remembered by many, as the play that left them reminiscing about the "what ifs" and the "what could have beens" in life ...

In California, there's a 3 year old orangutan was depressed after losing his parents. He wouldn't eat and didn't respond to any medical treatments. The veteranarians thought he would surely die from sadness.

The zoo keepers found an old sick dog on the grounds in the park at the zoo where the orangutan lived and took the dog to the animal treatment center. The 2 lost souls met and have been inseparable ever since.

The orangutan found a new reason to live and both always try their best to be a good companion to their new found friend. They are together 24 hours a day in all their activities. Although Roscoe (the orangutan) has aqua phobia and needs his friend's help to swim.

Often, it is said life is too short. Some may said it is too long. But honestly, nothing would make sense if hearts are not touched.

Even true friendship exists in the animal kingdom, have you found yours? =)

Face Shop Pomegranate Lipcare

I hv tried so many lip care and I hv only based on two - Chapstick and Face Shop Plus+1 Lip Care Stick in Pomegranate.

The pomegranate lip care is non sticky and lightweight - contains petroleum jelly, Macadamia nut oil, beeswax and castor & peppermint oil.

Since I'm not a lipstick fan so getting a lip care with color, it's a must. I specially love the light but flattering reddish pink color!

You just hv to twist and apply. Let's hope you don't get those faulty sticks that once you twist it out, it will never go back in, hehehe ...

Toy Story 3

Belatedly, but gratefully, I finally came around and watch this movie.

I hv always been a Pixar fans and this time they raise the bar exceptionally high. Toy Story 3 is simple and down to earth - one that both kids and adults can relate to. It's full of soul with charismatic dialogue. At every corner, there is something moving coated with humor. Something so true, layered with sentiment. Not to forget, it's also hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time!

I proudly admit that I was teary eyed during the trash escapade, especially when Andy moved to another phase of his life, leaving his toys behind. Most may take away from the movie that it’s better to reuse or recycle toys than to throw away. But personally for moi, its slightly different.

Seeing how these toys came to live (especially how Barbie is romanced by doll Ken, hehe!) revives my childhood memories - all those imaginations of them conversing among each other and having adventures all together in our small, tiny living room. (And Mom thought I was crazy!).

The greatest thing about this show is that it taps into one of the our most ordinary sadness. We were all once a kid and we all had at least one favorite toy. It may not be the most expensive or extravagant of all but to a child, each toy has its beauty and not everyone can see it.

I remembered how torn apart I was when forced to decide which toys to go to trash and which to go to store room. As cliché as it sounds, when we were forced to grow up due to circumstances, we put away childish things and lost the things that used to make us happy.

It's not the end of the world, we all know but somewhere deep within, we would miss it. May be not now but one day - one day when something in our life triggers and flash those childhood memories you hold so dear to at your very own eyes. And it's with this back drop that Pixar made me miss my life size Pink Panther. :(

"PUYO" is the concept car built for the 40th Tokyo Auto Show 2007 - a truly outstanding innovation from Honda. Its name meant to onomatopoetically convey the Japanese phrase for “touching the vehicle’s soft body.” (Ehem!) They hope drivers will regard the Puyo as more a lovable pet than a piece of machinery.

PUYO is a seamless and contour - a soft box with gel body featuring soft silicone so it can absorb light collisions. It is said that the same material is used for ipod covers (first few generations): a texture that is harder than Jell-O (Don't you just luv food analogy? Hehe!) but softer than an eraser, which can be pinched with the fingers.

With the maximum space, it can seat four adults comfortably. The seats are reminiscent of barstools while the back seats is a comfortable bench that similar a couch. I personally don't like two door cars - only for selfish people but Puyo's doors once flung open out and up in a scissor like fashion, it give access to both rows - front and back seats.

I love the warm and friendly impression it gave. It looks like marshmallow on wheels. Its panoramic windows and glass roof is amazing. Its interior is refreshing with an astounding touch of transparency and glows in the dark, making it safe for pedestrians, which also facilitates a more intimate relationship between people and their cars.

I'm a true blue minimalist when travelling, which is why I specially admires Puyo's minimalist design that features an ultra-high efficiency and fuel cell technology that is environmentally friendly - using hydrogen gas that emits only water and heat when it is combusted. The joystick enables intuitive steering, featuring 360-degree rotation mode (check out the video below!), which makes parallel parking a piece of cake.

PUYO promises to provide a different driving experience. When vehicle starts up, the elastic qualities of the fabric will rise up, giving it a 3D experience. Equipped luminous fluid meter displays and a panel monitor that rises up when the car starts and retracts when ignition is cut. Driven with a joystick instead of a steering wheel, which will also glow in different colors depending on it's running or stand still.

And of course, it's more of a cute car than a cool sports one. Let's all wait for it to be launched in the market.

Fall 2010: Christian Dior

I hv never really paid attention to Christian Dior apparel until their Haute Couture Fall 2010. This made me an even more believer in John Galliano.

Flowers is the theme and is done literally and beautifully. The whole collection is inspired by photographers — Irving Penn and Nick Knight, who were enchanted by the colors and structures of the flowers. I particularly love the dramatic silhouette and the delicate overflowing drapes. A real feast to the eyes!

It's spectacular. The dramatic shape with cinched waists as well as its incredibly details would just blow your mind. Designs are fresh and the colors are vibrant. Fully of frothy tulle and the inverted cellophane bouquet on the heads gave it an interesting twist.

I hv so much to do. Scrap that - I hv TONNES to do. Some thinks my life is manageable because I can multi task. Don't. Please don't.

Constantly, I felt like 24 hrs in a day ain't enough. 7 days in a week is insufficient. And 2 days in the weekend passes too fast! I felt like grabbing the clock and freezing time and then un-pause it back when I'm done recuperating.

Sigh ...

I often said to myself, "Once I get _____ done, then I will calm down and get back to normal again".

But it never did.

Every morning, while brushing my teeth, my mind would visualize a To Do list (which just seems to get longer by the day). When there is so much to do, often the most important things get shoved to the side or don't make to the list at all.

It's time to stop putting what is important on hold. It's time to stop using everything in our life as an excuse and not do "first things first". Hold that thought and first let me breathe ...

I'm not always a belt person - even if my pants are getting loose, I wouldn't wear a belt. The only belt I ever have is those that comes with the tops I bought.

Why, you may ask? I always think that the bulge caused by the belt's buckle (especially if you wear a fitted top) is so 'manly' and so unflattering. I hv been shopping for a good belt with the thinnest buckle but I couldn't find one. I even dropped by those luxury brands shops like Gucci and couldn't find the right one.

So, you can imagine me jumping up and down in glee when I came across Invisibelt!. It's like a light bulb suddenly appeared on top of my head - an Aha! moment or even why-didn't-I-think-of-that moment!

Too bad, they only deliver to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. They don't deliver to Singapore. =( Otherwise, I would hv used this blog post to *hint, hint* all my frens that I'm a chocolate fan, hahaha!

Cashiers

All of you out there, who are Cashiers or ever have been on in your life - You have my utmost RESPECT!!!

I hv always be irritated when the cashiers in supermarket made mistakes. Be it it's some teeny weeny ones like keying the wrong amount for my credit card transaction or bigger ones like not able to scan the products properly (as if it's the cashier's fault, eh?). The wait made me impatient and you can see me standing with one leg open and arms folded in front of my chest, lips twitched one side, left eyebrow up (I can only raised the left one, hehe!), glaring at the cashier - observing his/her every move in anger. That is me - before 27th June 2010, the day I was a cashier myself.

It really isn't an easy job. The pressure of the queue behind the customer you are serving is nerve racking. The customer's eyes following your every move - from scanning the product to getting the change or even pressing the credit card swipe machine is intensely distressing.

You can imagine my panic when I press the wrong amount after swiping the customer's visa card. Instead of keying $36, I keyed $0.36! With repeated apologies, I keyed another transaction of $35.64 (the difference). How silly is that!!

There are times that I had to run across the hall to get a similar product with the price tag since I couldn't find the bar code of some products (and also because of the limited work force on the day). And of course, how can I forget those nasty customers with out-of-the-world kinda remarks - holding a brief up in the air and asking herself,

"Is this really worth $3?"

Oh cummon, are you for real !?! It's only freaking $3 for goodness sake!!!

Because it's a warehouse sale, the air is filled with dust. I could feel the creeping itch on my face, the dirt on my fingers and the particles through my nostrils are despicable. I was fine by the day but when it goes to the night, my calf is screaming with pain. I couldn't sleep because it wasn't aching (I can take aching) but it was so painful that it was driving me to the verge of tears. Thank God, there's an affordable massage promotion at a stone's throw away that can "chopped" my pain away!

I guess, I wasn't used to the long hours of standing. But that isn't all. The dust made me breathless and difficult in sleeping because whenever I tried to breathe (which is like - every few seconds), there's this wheezing sound and it irritates me to the core but yet, I couldn't stop it. Doctor said I felt the impacts later at night because of the difference in temperature, which didn't really convince me but then again, I know zilch in medical.

Oh well, in a nut shell, with a sigh of relief - I'm glad it's all over and to think of it, it wasn't so bad after all! Hey, I now know how to operate those swiping debit and credit cards machine and being a cashier myself made me think twice before glaring to another one in future!
